Nestled in the heart of Marin County, Olema is a charming village that attracts travelers seeking solace amidst stunning natural landscapes. Located just a stone's throw away from Point Reyes National Seashore, this idyllic town offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure at the crossroads of State Route 1 and Sir Francis Drake Boulevard.
The name "Olema" finds its origins in the Coast Miwok language, meaning "coyote valley".
Steeped in history and surrounded by stunning landscapes, Olema holds tales of the past within its bounds. Once believed to be the epicenter of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, remnants of the event's impact are still visible along nearby hiking trails. While historical references to this seismic event can be found throughout the town, recent evidence suggests the epicenter may lie closer to Daly City.
Despite its size, Olema has also been immortalized in music, notably in the late-1960s country-rock hit "Hippie from Olema" by The Youngbloods. Olema has two restaurants—Sir and Star and Due West—, and several inviting bed and breakfasts. Just a short distance away from town lies the Bear Valley Visitor Center, serving as a gateway to the Point Reyes National Seashore. Here, guests can peruse exhibits, purchase books, and enjoy picnics amidst the picturesque surroundings. Nearby, a Morgan horse ranch and Kule Loklo, a reconstructed Miwok village, offer further opportunities for exploration and discovery.
