Current openings: Fort Ross' Coastal Academy
Part-Time Coastal Naturalist (20-30 hours per week)
Fort Ross conservancy is looking for a part-time Coastal Naturalist to join the Coastal Academy team in January 2026. The primary role of the Coastal Naturalist at Fort Ross Conservancy is to educate visitors about the diverse coastal ecosystems, wildlife, and cultural history present within the Fort Ross State Historic Park. In addition, the Coastal Naturalist assists with surveys, supports volunteers, and contributes to conservation initiatives within Fort Ross State Historic Park. This position may have evening and weekend work.
Key responsibilities
Environmental education, interpretation and outreach
- Deliver interpretive programs, focusing on the coastal landscapes, plant and animal species, geological features, and indigenous cultural history.
- Provide hands-on learning experiences for schools, youth groups, and the public to promote environmental stewardship (both on-site and in virtual formats).
- Utilize engaging and interactive techniques to effectively communicate with diverse audiences, including visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
- Share insights into the interconnectedness of ecosystems and human history, emphasizing conservation principles and sustainable practices.
- Foster relationships with local communities, environmental organizations, and other stakeholders to promote awareness of Fort Ross Conservancy's mission and programs.
- Participate in community events, festivals, workshops, and outreach activities to build support for conservation initiatives and encourage public involvement in park stewardship.
Resource Management
- Assist in the monitoring and management of natural resources within the park, including conducting surveys, collecting data, and contributing to conservation initiatives.
- Provide input on habitat restoration projects, invasive species control efforts, and other strategies to protect and preserve the coastal environment.
Required:
- A valid license to drive in California
- Ability to walk up to 6 miles during programs on uneven terrain including sand, the rocky shore, and along coastal bluffs
- Flexible working schedule
- Must be able to pass a background check
Preferred qualifications
- Completed a degree in environmental science, ecology, marine biology or another related field/other relevant background.
- At least 1 year of experience in environmental education, working with kids, or teaching in formal or non-formal education settings.
Marine Ecology Program Instructors
Position: Casual, on-call
We are looking for passionate marine science educators who enjoy working with kids to be instructors for the MEP and assist with Coastal Academy initiatives.
Role specifications:
- Teach students of all ages, mostly elementary and middle schoolers, in a 1-5 hour outdoor education program.
- Lead activities, dissections, hikes, environmental education, and coastal exploration.
- Assist with outreach events for the Coastal Academy.
- Have up-to-date knowledge of the natural and cultural history of the Sonoma Coast including the history of sea otter hunting at Fort Ross (instructors will also receive training).
- Able to independently and collaboratively deliver the MEP while ensuring the safety of program participants and staff.
