Fort Ross Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) and California State Park cooperating association is located in gorgeous West County, Sonoma.
Job Title: Executive Director, Fort Ross Conservancy
Classification: Minimum 32 hours a week, exempt
Salary range: 48k to 55k depending on experience, plus benefits
Reports to: FRC Chief Executive Officer Sarah Sweedler
The Fort Ross Conservancy Executive Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of day-to-day operations of the organization which supports Fort Ross State Historic Park and Salt Point Park. The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring the organization has a long-range strategy and that it makes continual progress towards its goals. This position requires working onsite full time at Fort Ross State Historic Park in Jenner, California.
The Executive Director will manage and grow all programs at our two parks. FRC programs include running two outdoor education programs serving 3000+ students a year, providing visitor services through our two visitor centers and bookshops, offering all public-facing interpretation, planning and execution of large scale events, and some maintenance and management of the physical plant.
The Executive Director will support fundraising in coordination with the CEO. Fundraising and grant management will be 25% of the Executive Director’s responsibility in the first year, and this role will increase as the ED becomes familiar with the organization.
Professional Qualifications Needed
- A bachelor’s degree.
- Five or more years senior nonprofit management experience.
- Transparent and high integrity leadership.
- Ability to work with grace across cultures and peoples.
- High level strategic thinking and planning:
- Ability to envision and convey the organization’s strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers and donors.
- Ability to problem solve and redesign our internal systems to increase our capacity.
- Ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission to donors, volunteers and the overall community.
- Strong coalition building: Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including partner agencies and volunteers.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong understanding of the media landscape.
- Strong public speaking ability.
- Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors.
- Solid HR and management skills:
- Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.
- Strong organizational skills, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.
- Strong financial literacy, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting.
- A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results.
- Active fundraising experience. Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community.
- Excellent work ethic with a high degree of energy.
Direct Reports: 1) Operations Manager; 2) Director of Programs; 3) Bilingual Guide and Historical Specialist; 4) Volunteer Coordinator & Event Planner.
Manage FRC staff
- Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.
- Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.
- See that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place.
- Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
- Coordinate monthly staff meetings to ensure staff understands the near and mid term organizational goals.
- Monitor Harvest Time tracking software to help staff prioritize their time and meet their deadlines.
- Coordinate all event logistics and planning with the team.
- Interface with California State Parks on daily matters of operation.
- Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position. Ensures that specific programs and bookshop are tracking to quarterly financial goals.
- Work with CFO to create annual FRC organizational budget.
- Attend board meetings; works with CFO to present financials to the board.
Fundraising / Donor relations
- Support CEO in initiating, writing, tracking, and reporting grant proposals.
- Support CEO in working with donors.
- Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs and goals.
- Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations.
- Represent the programs and point of view of the organization to agencies, organizations, and the general public.
- Write for and coordinate staff in producing a monthly electronic newsletter.
- Write and edit brochures, website content, program marketing collateral.
- See that the board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it. Write bi-monthly report for board packet. Working with Operations Manager, put together bi-monthly board packet.
- Work with the board president and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.
- Recruit for new board of directors.
- Assist with board elections.
- Assist FRC team in high level event execution management for Fort Ross Festival, Harvest Festival, and other events as scheduled.
- Provide sponsors with day of event support.
